Frequently asked

How does identification work?

Point the camera at whatever's been found and take a photo. Underfoot sends that single image to an identification service to work out the species, then shows the result along with how confident it is. When it isn't sure, it says so and offers a short list of likely matches instead of guessing.

Is my child's data safe?

Underfoot is built to collect as little as possible. A child profile is just a nickname and an icon — no name, email, or photo of the child is ever requested. There are no ad or tracking SDKs in the app. Full detail is in the privacy policy.

Which species and regions are covered?

Underfoot covers more than 2,000 species found across the United States — insects, spiders, and the under-a-rock crowd like roly-polies, millipedes, snails, slugs, and centipedes. And if you find something outside the guide, Underfoot draws it a card on the spot.

How do I delete our data?

From a child's profile, a parent can delete that profile and everything under it — specimen cards, locally stored photos, all of it — in one action, right on the device. No waiting, no support request required.

Does it work without internet?

Yes. The field guide itself — species entries, illustrations, habitat notes, and your collected specimen cards — lives on the device, so browsing and reviewing finds works offline. Identifying a brand-new photo needs a connection, since that step uses an outside service to name the species.
